Enhance Learners Creativity via STEM/STEAM design projects

Curiosity Machine - https://www.curiositymachine.org/challenges/ - is an interesting website that connects scientists and engineers with younger learners inspiring them to be creative inventors.

The site provides a wide variety of open-ended engineering design projects that are appropriate for K-12 learners

These challenges are hands-on projects inspired by the cutting-edge work of scientists and engineers.

In each challenge, learners are presented with a complex problem to solve, and they progress with support from a trained mentor who guides and encourages them to persist through failure and bring their ideas to reality.

The "Design challenges"...
  • will take about 90 minutes to plan, build, test, and submit to the site for mentor feedback. A mentor will respond within 3-5 days, and then users can start the redesign process!

The "Redesign process"...
  • can go on for as long as you can make improvements to the design--and the same mentor will be ready to offer feedback on every change you make.
Mentors are professional scientists and engineers from all over the world who are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of inventors.

Anyone can create a Curiosity Machine account and access its videos and engineering design challenges for free.

For schools, Learning providers and other groups interested in support and training, the site offers a paid membership.

Watch the video at https://www.youtube.com/embed/t_x9fL0MF0w to learn more about Curiosity Machine.

If you give “Curiosity Machine" a try or have already used "Curiosity Machine“, do share your feedback, positive and/or negative, in the comments.

A Tool for Creating Interactive Videos

Vibby - https://www.vibby.com/explore/vibs and/or https://www.vibby.com/explore/vibsVibby - allows educators to re-use existing videos to engage their learners around the video content they've created or curated for them.

Vibby is a relatively new video platform that allows users, educators and/or learners to create interactive video learning experiences.

The purpose of Vibby is to enable users to design interactive video content geared towards engaging learners and enhancing communication.

When using Vibby individuals will be able to highlight, share and discuss parts of any online video.

As educators, you can utilise this video platform to engage learners through discussions held around the content of the video.

"Learners can add their comments and exchange their thoughts about specific points in the video."

NOTE: Users can select any YouTube video and make it interactive by seamlessly highlighting the exact moments you want to draw your learners attention to. Comments can be added right on the video creating synchronous interaction among learners.

If you give Vibby " a try or have already used " Vibby, do share your feedback, positive and/or negative, in the comments.

A Chrome Extension for Clutter-free Reading and Printing

Mercury Reader - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mercury-reader/oknpjjbmpnndlpmnhmekjpocelpnlfdi?hl=en -  OR - https://mercury.postlight.com/ - is a Chrome extension that removes sidebar content from articles that you view in your Chrome web browser.

Mercury Reader will hide...
  • banner ads,
  • suggested "related" articles, and
  • anything else that is not a part of the primary article on the page you are viewing.

When educators and/or learners use Mercury Reader to print an article, all of the sidebar content is removed thereby saving them paper and ink.

"Mercury Reader is more than just a tool for hiding sidebar content from a page."

It can also be used to adjust the font size and colour contrast of a page and Kindle users can send a page directly from Mercury Reader to their Kindles.

An Interactive Map of Languages

Langscape - http://langscape.umd.edu/map.php - could be a good resource for learners to consult when researching the history and culture of a place or region in the world.

Langscape is...
  • basically an interactive map created at the Maryland Language Science Centre.

  • an interactive map displaying more than 6,000 markers representing more than 6,000 languages. Each marker represents the native language of that particular location.

Users can Zoom-in and click on a marker to learn more about the language.

Once clicked, they will be able to find more information about that marker through links to pages on...
  1. Ethnologue,
  2. Language Archives, and
  3. Wikipedia.

These pages will provide information about whether or not the language is extinct and/or its origins.

Learners may be able to use the information available through Langscape to learn how the native language in an area contributed to the dialect and or accents present in that area today.

If you give " Langscape " a try or have already used " Langscape ", do share your feedback, positive and/or negative, in the comments.

Convert Images to Video

One of the best ways educators and/or Learners can share or view photos is by turning them into a video slideshow.

ImageToVideo - https://imagetovideo.com/ - is a simple on-line converter which lets users turn any images to video.

"ImageToVideo" is...
  • free, users don’t need to sign up to use it, and it works in any web browser.
  • lets users include up to 30 photos, and they can add your own choice of music too.

How to use ImageToVideo to convert images to video with very little effort.

  1. Click "Upload Your Images" then select the photos needed in the video.
  2. Next, you’ll see small thumbnails of your chosen images.
Click and drag to reorder them, and/or
Hit the red X to delete any.
    Click Next (>>) to continue.
  3. Now choose some music.
MP3 is supported (Be aware of "Use Restrictions").
  4. Add some text and/or a logo.
Choose Logo to add a watermark to your video. Use the Logo Options to set its position and size.
  5. Choose Text to add a caption for each photo in your video.
Add your text and adjust it with the various options.
Hit the + icon to add more text for subsequent images.
  6. Finally, click Create the Video Now.
Your photos and music will now be uploaded, and the process takes a few minutes to complete.
  7. Users can then download their video in the MP4 format, and/or view it on-line.

As you can see, it’s a simple and fast process, but only gives you limited control over the final product.

It's the same as with the other on-line converters you can use, such as...
  • Kapwing - https://www.kapwing.com/image-to-video - and/or
  • Online-Convert - https://www.online-convert.com/ -
These are both fine, but have largely the same features as ImageToVideo.

If you give "ImageToVideo" a try or have already used "ImageToVideo", do share your feedback, positive and/or negative, in the comments.

Thank you

EdTech Tool for Learning Environments - Classroomscreen

From my experience, often the best edtech tools for learning environments are...
  1. something developed by educators,
  2. super simple to use,
  3. free, and
  4. works in any browser on all devices.

Classroomscreen - https://classroomscreen.com/ - is...

  • something that I have been sharing for some time now. Developed by teacher Laurens Kopper, this simple to use tool has lots of little helpful tools to help educators in their learning environments with their job of teaching.
  • super simple to use as you'll see if you watch Mark Anderson's short video which explains some of the various features of Classroomscreen - https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ga3Sdjes2B0

Trading Card Creator

"Trading Card Creator" - http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/trading-card-creator-30056.html -  provides learners with an alternative way to demonstrate their literacy knowledge and skills when writing about popular culture texts or real world examples.

The "Trading Card Creator" interactive allows Learners to create their own trading card about...
  • a real or fictional person,
  • a place,
  • an object,
  • an event, and/or
  • an abstract concept.

"Having seen how many younger learners are into "Trading Cards" I think this could be a big hit."
These cards can be used with any type of book that learners are reading or subjects that they are studying, and make for an excellent pre-writing exercise for learners who are writing narrative stories and need to consider characters, setting, and plot.

Specific prompts guide learners through the various types of cards, expanding learners' thinking from the basic information and description of the topic to making personal connections to the subject.

"Trading Card Creator's" save capability gives learners a way to work on a draft of their card and come back to it to rework and revise as necessary, and to save their finished product to share with peers, educators and other stakeholders.

Images can be uploaded into the card to give the finished product a complete and polished look.

"Trading Card Creator's" Cards can be bundled into...
  • a single or
  • small collection (8 card maximum)

...so that learners have a way of sort and grouping similar topics in one file.

If you give "Trading Card Creator"  a try or have already used "Trading Card Creator", do share your feedback, positive and/or negative, in the comments.
